Banned West Indies star all-rounder Andre Russell was named T20 International Cricketer of the Year at last night’s WIPA/CWI Annual Awards ceremony at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.

Russell, a resident of Old Harbour, is currently serving a one year ban for breaching World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) whereabouts rules three times in a 12-month period.

Prior to his suspension in January of this year by an independent anti-doping panel, Russell, 29, was undoubtedly one of the best players in T20 International cricket due to his consistent performances with both bat and ball and as a proven match winner in T20 franchises around the world.

But the night belonged to Barbadian Roston Chase, who collected four awards including the main prize of Cricketer of the Year.

The 25-year-old is enjoying an impressive start to his Test career after debuting against India in July 2016. He has scored three centuries and three 50s from 10 Tests – all achieved in difficult circumstances.

In addition to copping the most coveted award, Chase was also named Test Cricketer of the Year, Emerging Cricketer of the Year and Regional Four-Day Cricketer of the Year.

Women’s captain, Jamaican Stafanie Taylor was named Women’s Cricketer of the Year as well as Women’s One Day International and Women’s T20 International cricket of the year.

The Chris Gayle Foundation was recognized on the night while lifetime awards went to Jamaican Cleveland Davidson and Walter Eden St. John of Grenada.
