Constituency chairman for the People’s National Party (PNP) in St Catherine South Western Dr Kurt Waul says the party has a “winning slate” of candidates capable of making a clean sweep of all divisions at the polls.

All four divisional seats in the constituency are presently held by the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in addition to the seat of Member of Parliament.

Last held in 2016 Local Government elections have been postponed twice, the new timeline set for no later than February 28, 2024.

Dr Waul was trounced by JLP incumbent Everald Warmington at the national polls in 2020, but the defeat has served to embolden him instead. Since then the Old Harbour Bay native has been busy putting in the hard yards on the ground while assembling a talented team of potentials in Natalie Ho (Church Pen Division), Obryan Leighton (Old Harbour Central Division), and Adrian Samuda (Old Harbour North Division).

Speaking recently at the party’s constituency conference for the Church Pen Division, attended by President Mark Golding and other renowned figures of the movement, Dr Waul says the team has been doing a whole lot.

“Comrade Mark Golding I am pleased to report to you directly that we have a winning slate of candidates whenever this corrupt government deems it fit to yield to the will of the people and hold the long overdue local government elections,” he said to rapturous acclaim from supporters. “The people already refer to them as councillors because of their strong presence inside their respective communities and I want them to get use to it because it will become a reality as long as they continue the hard work.”

In the last two years he noted that the core of the team, all holders of at least a university first degree, has been scouring every nook and cranny of the constituency listening to the people, identifying their needs and addressing some of their concerns however humanly possible.

“Comrades if I were to start my presentation tonight by talking about the mismanagement and corruption of this labour government I would be here all night but Natalie only afforded me 10 minutes so I won’t go much into that,” he said before pointing to areas like health care, education, farming, housing, social support namely water and sports, job opportunities and funeral grants that they’ve assisted constituents.

“We have walked the length and breadth of this constituency and division and one major issue I want to highlight now is that of children whose parents can’t afford to send them to school consistently, as a country we seem to get overly preoccupied with short term measures to combat crime, murder and low productivity but not much time on the long term measures. You see vulnerable children grow into vulnerable teenagers and adults who contribute disproportionately to the crime and the low productivity this country faces. As a country we need to expand the safety net for our children much more than what we have now, we can’t rely on MP salary increases to provide that safety net, as I heard one so called learned labour MP Delroy Chuck explaining, that he welcomes the salary increases because he has to give out a lot of money to poor people for things like lunch money and school fees,” said Waul, a medical doctor by profession.

“If this is the sort of politics we are promoting for the future we are doomed as a country. How can we depend on one politically biased man in a constituency of over 50,000 people to do the right thing, picking and choosing his political allies to make better off while the others suffer?”
Such utterance moves Jamaica “backwards as a country” and is minimalist mindset that is indicative of the high number of children force to fend for themselves, he noted.

“When I thought of entering politics I never imagined my job would be to sit around a desk to distribute scarce benefits and spoils, and when I hear members of the government speak they seem to embrace this sort of thing and want to expand on it, I want to nip it in the bud,” he continued.

“I entered politics to take on the complex tasks of formulating national policies to make our country more productive and wealthy by capitalizing on our natural talents in innovation, music, sports and culture, on our natural resources such as our geo-location, the sea, sand, sun and of course the good ole sensimena.

“These are complex issues and both may require a simultaneous solution if we want to fast-track our country on a better path. South West Saint Catherine and Church Pen if you send me to Gordon House I pledge that these are the things I will tackle along with the local issues that plague you. You need safe and proper sports field for recreation, people in Thetford, Bushy Park, Island Farm, Spring Village, Lloyd’s Pen and  Phase Two need titles for their lands. They also need the intervention of local government authorities to help them properly put together these housing developments, the good people paying their taxes in Five Acres, Nightingale Grove Scheme, Gutters, Vineyards and Marlie Mount need to know how it go. How come the roads in these developments so chaka chaka? Why is it that their tax dollars not working for them?

“The current Member of Parliament say him is a road and works ‘Gini God’, I see him touring up and down the country looking at the bad roads and of course tracing and cussing people off, his favourite pass time. I hear him one day proclaiming that the roads from Harbour view to Morant Bay is 93% completed, but meanwhile in his constituency that he has been MP for over 22 years, if you ask a man from Herring Lane, Martin Lane or Sweet Sop Lane how much percent of the road fix they will tell you zero percent over these 22-plus years.

“The people in Martin lane got so fed up with their lane that they fixed it themselves of course with a little ‘smalls’ from me, Dr Waul is not a mean man you know.

“The people in Spring village cannot manage the suffering any longer, I heard the MP say the important bridge that broke dung nearly one year now soon fix but I never heard a timeline and the people afraid to ask him or protest because the last time something like this happened in Bushy Park and the people enquired and protested he told them no ends of bad wud and publicly declared he would take three years longer to complete the project in retribution because the people dared to enquire and protest. Dr Waul don’t tell his people bad words and spite them, I give of myself with humility. I don’t ugly up my face so that people find it difficult to approach me. And to be frank, my people, road works is very important but it should be a given that the MP will improve the roads and he shouldn’t use that as any sorts of accolade. Moreover the roads in this constituency can only take you from Bodles to High House and from Eight Mile, Bartons to seaside in Old Harbour Bay. My hopes for you and this country will provide opportunities to take us far and wide in this world.  My people time come for different kinds of ideas and politics. Time come for the People’s National Party. Time come for Dr Kurt Waul time come for Adrian Samuda, time come for Obryan Leighton, time come for Natalie Ho, and time come for Mark Golding.”
