A 53-year-old unemployed man from Bartons, St Catherine, has been remanded in custody after appearing in court on a murder charge stemming from a deadly weekend dispute that claimed the life of his 21-year-old neighbour.

Leroy Bogle, of the Popeye’s Hill community, was arrested and charged following the fatal stabbing of Tyrese Dennis on the night of April 4, 2026.

According to police reports, the incident unfolded shortly after 10:30 p.m. when both men became embroiled in an altercation that quickly escalated into a physical fight. Family members of Bogle intervened and managed to separate the two. Dennis then left the scene and returned to his own home.

However, investigators say Bogle did not let the matter rest. He allegedly armed himself with a knife and went in search of Dennis, confronting him midway between their two residences.

It is understood that during the confrontation, Dennis was stabbed once in the chest. He collapsed at the scene and died moments later, before any medical assistance could arrive. Bogle reportedly fled the area immediately after the stabbing.

Acting on tips from residents, police later tracked Bogle to an area in the nearby Davis community, where he was taken into custody without further incident. Witness statements were collected, and the formal charge of murder was laid against him.

This is the second recorded murder of the year for the police subdivision of Old Harbour.

Bogle made his first appearance before the St Catherine Parish Court on April 17, 2026. He was not required to enter a plea at this stage, as murder charges are indictable and must be tried in the Home Circuit Court.

The presiding magistrate ordered that Bogle remain remanded in custody. The case is set to be mentioned again on a later date, as police continue to gather evidence and prepare the case file for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Residents of the quiet farming district of Popeyes Hill have expressed shock over the killing, describing the two men as neighbours who had known each other for years.

The case continues.
