A man is now in custody for allegedly assaulting and disarming a police officer last night.

The incident unfolded at the exit of the PJ Patterson Highway (formerly Highway 2000 East West) in the vicinity of the Glenmuir Road round-a-bout in May Pen, Clarendon.

According the police at about 11:00 pm yesterday, a corporal attached to the Ferry Police Station was “physically assaulted and disarmed” of his weapon whilst trying to arrest a motorist for breaches under the Road Traffic Act.

The motorist, 41-year-old Gregory Thomas of New Bowen, Clarendon, it is alleged, became physically entangled with the officer, who was disarmed of his service pistol in the process while suffering “injuries to the elbow and back”.

During the scuffle between the cop and the motorist, a licensed firearm holder intervened by discharging “two rounds in the air and the motorist drop the weapon,” the police stated.

The matter has been reported to the Independent Commission (INDECOM) and the Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI).
