Waul, the People’s National Party (PNP) candidate, lost by over 5,000 votes in a failed bid to topple veteran incumbent Everald Warmington who secured a fifth successive term for the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) as member of parliament

At the end of the preliminary count Warmington, 68, received 11,185 votes, while 6,084 votes went to Dr Waul with 51 ballots going to independent candidate Upton Blake.

Following the aftermath of what turned out to be a massive landslide victory for the JLP which now controls more than two-thirds of the seats in the lower house, Dr Waul said his work for the people is far from over.

“We fought a tough fight,” he scribed in a post to supporters two days after the elections had ended. “Though the results were not what we worked for, it has not dampened our resolve to make this constituency a better place for all who live here. I serve this community with love and pride and I will continue to fight for its improvement regardless of the election outcome.”

The 43-year-old medical doctor who hails from Old Harbour Bay in the constituency, added: “To the voters of SWSC (South West St Catherine) who put their confidence in me, thank you, we would not have gotten this far without you. I remain humbled and grateful for the outpouring of love, support and encouragement you showed throughout this campaign.

“To my outstanding team who worked tirelessly night and day to organize and mobilize a movement that took many by surprise - I want to thank you for your unwavering focus and commitment. This was a team effort - we should all be proud of the work we poured into this fight. You have my limitless appreciation!

“Today is a new day, as we look to the future we will remain strong and will redouble our efforts to continue to serve this community.

“We are back to work - doing what we do best - caring for people!”
