DSP Manderson notes concern in Old Harbour amid COVID-19 crisis
Old Harbour and indeed the parish of St Catherine are, fortunately so far, yet to register any confirmed case of the virus. The fact that this reality may change sooner than later, however, doesn’t take away the important role citizens can play in delaying what at the current rate seems inevitable.
Needless to say commander in charge of the police sub-division of Old Harbour DSP Damion Manderson says he’s concerned with one particular observation.
“I am concern about the number of senior citizens or persons over the age of 60 who are seen in the commercial district of Old Harbour, especially during peak periods,” he said in a note to residents in light of the government’s imposition of tighter restrictions to curtail the spread of what is now a global pandemic.
Effective today, and for the next six days, all non-essential services within the private and public sector have been ordered closed. Fifteen COVID-19 cases have been confirmed on the island to date with many more people placed under quarantine at a government facility or home.
In light of this, DSP Manderson is urging residents to abide by the new directives triggered by the 2015 Disaster Risk Management Act, the Emergency Powers Act and the Public Health Act.
“COVID-19 is real and we must do everything we can to protect our most vulnerable. Please let us: take care of our seniors, sanitize ourselves and our surroundings so as to contain the transmission, stay out of public spaces and maintain social distancing," he said.
“Remember that all bars and places of amusements to include clubs are to remain closed for the next 14 days.
“We must look out for each other and be responsible citizens."
