Jamaicans will have more opportunities to donate blood, beginning in October, as the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) expands its blood collection services to Princess Margaret Hospital in St. Thomas and the Greater Portmore Health Centre in St. Catherine.

Beginning next month, blood collection will be available at:

  • The Princess Margaret Hospital, St. Thomas — First Monday of each month, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Greater Portmore Health Centre, St. Catherine — Fourth Tuesday of each month, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The expansion is part of the NBTS’ ongoing efforts to improve access to blood donation and encourage more eligible Jamaicans to become regular blood donors.

“Every additional collection opportunity makes it easier for Jamaicans to give blood and help save a life. We are encouraging eligible persons to make blood donation a regular part of their lives and help us maintain a safe and adequate blood supply for patients across the country,” noted NBTS director, Dr Kamille West-Mitchell.

The NBTS is also reminding members of the public that blood collection is available on Saturdays at several locations, including:

  • National Blood Transfusion Service, 21 Slipe Pen Road, Kingston — Every Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Spanish Town Hospital — Every Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Cornwall Regional Hospital — Second Saturday of each month, 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Black River Health Centre — Fourth Saturday of each month, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Kiwanis National Chest Blood Collection Centre is currently undergoing refurbishment and is expected to reopen next month. It will provide additional opportunities for blood donation in the Corporate Area:

  • Monday to Thursday: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Friday: 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Blood is needed every day to support patients requiring transfusions, including persons involved in trauma cases, patients undergoing surgery, mothers experiencing complications during childbirth, children and others with critical medical needs. The NBTS encourages eligible Jamaicans to donate blood regularly and help strengthen the national blood supply.
