The Colbeck district resident was in a permanent state of anxiety over the last few days after being unable to make contact with her 33-year-old son, who she believes is experiencing mental breakdown.

Mother searches for missing Old Harbour son

Joseph Alexander, a freelance graphic artist and dad of a two-year-old boy, was last seen on February 28 on March Pen Road, Spanish Town after leaving the Old Harbour community the day before.

Sophia Simpson, Alexander’s mom, became increasingly concern when he did not show up after several days had passed, while numerous calls to his mobile phone went unanswered.

A formal missing person report was filed Monday, but the word did not gather momentum until she contacted Old Harbour News yesterday.

Within a few hours after the local community news published her story, Simpson said she got a call from a friend who informed that ‘Joe’, as he’s referred to by friends, was spotted in the town centre in Spanish Town, mere metres from where he was last seen on the last day in February.

“He was standing at HiLo [Shopping Centre], talking to one of his school friends from back in the day. That guy did call me to say he’s OK and he’s in Spanish Town,” Simpson reported to Old Harbour News when she saw her son last night.

Alexander had lost his phone, she said, but didn’t bother to contact anyone because “he needed time to clear his head,” a clear sign that something was riding on the young man’s mind.

On the outside though, Joseph did not show any sign of mental illness.

“He looks OK, he’s very clean and he said he worked for the week and he said he buy a sneakers and he went to the barber and trim… he said he met up on some of his friend and they gave him money,” she added.

Old Harbour News also received plaudits for the role played in raising awareness about her missing son.

“A lady saw the story and contacted her son who knows him and then the son called me and say he saw him and he’s OK,” Simpson said. “And then somebody else who also saw the story called and said they saw him in Spanish Town… and we just get a car and went there same time.”
