Labour Day highlights: Old Harbour Mews build recreational park
Not surprising the Old Harbour Police Station was a beehive of activities with its police youth club and even taxi operators joining forces with law officers to give the facility a facelift.
Old unwanted items were removed from several spaces with a fresh coat of paint adding a bit of colour and life to the antique building.
Citizens of the tiny community of Harbour Mews, came together to build a mini recreational park and play court before heavy showers forced a brief stoppage.
Carline Ellis, president of the Old Harbour Mews Citizen’s Association’s Ocean Cluster, says it was important to transform the location which had become cause for concern with regards to their security and safety.
“We have been cleaning it for years because there is no light and it is not safe for anyone to walk here especially at nights. We have written to the counsellor and JPS (Jamaica Public Service) to have a light pole install but nothing has happened to this day. We were told by JPS that they are not installing any new light poles as yet.
“We did some checks and were told it would cost us $25,000 for us to do the lights privately, so we will be working on that,” Ellis told Old Harbour News while a group of mostly women and children performed their civic duty.
“We are going to put a half court on that side so the children can play some basketball or netball; we already have the post to put in place.”
Worshipers at the Faith Anointed International Ministries, headed by firebrand preacher Howard ‘Goddy Goddy’ Reynolds, took up tools in hand this time to carry out semi-road refurbishing works at the entrance of its ministerial office situated along the commercial strip of Marlie Mount.
Prophecy Basic School in Old Harbour Bay was among the main Labour Day projects undertaken by the Jamaica Energy Partners which also had teams at the Kingston Public Hospital and the Windward Road Post Office.
And Juici Patties Old Harbour employees took time off from the daily hustle to re-mark the parking lot, a general move to improve customer experience.
