Leader, mentor, father-figure Errol Lewin is dead
Lewin, 74, passed away yesterday evening in Florida, sending seismic tremors throughout the entire Old Harbour and beyond the shores of Jamaica.
He has been battling an undisclosed illness for some time now which required surgery in the United States a few years ago.
No official word has come from the Lewin’s family or Fairlane Holdings, the parent company of Jamaica Bedding Limited and OJ Koolers Limited, confirming the death of one of its founding members, but a formal statement is anticipated in short order.
As news began to spread of Lewin’s passing a flood of tributes started to flow and will increase in the coming days and even weeks ahead.
His impact as the consummate businessman, statesman, mentor, father-figure and inspirational leader leaves a vacuum that will perhaps be never replaced. His aura commanded respect, his calming and soothing words ever reassuring to those who knew him personally and even those whom he engaged in passing moments, however briefly.
“Errol Lewin is a quietly powerful contributor, always has an encouragement to give in the most grounded manner,” said Mahalia Watson, past president of the then Old Harbour Chamber of Commerce. “His words are always positively focused towards progressive movements. His memory will always be pleasant, powerful and comforting.”
Before his departure into the afterlife, Mr Lewin oftentimes spoke proudly of his roots growing up in Old Harbour and the fond memories he had as a little Black boy, who harboured big dreams then and which he fulfilled later on.
Primarily with his younger brother Lloyd with whom he co-founded OJ Koolers during the 1990s and later Jamaica Bedding in 2001, Errol was the epitome of black excellence in the business sphere here in the southwest of St Catherine. He was an astute businessman, but even more profoundly was his character that served as a beacon to almost everyone.
“For me personally, I’ll remember him the most as a kind-hearted person. He always has a timely word of encouragement,” remarked educator Josephine Parker-Mullings, who is member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church family in Old Harbour of which Lewin is also a member.
In a statement Treacha Reid, president of the South St Catherine Chamber of Commerce (formerly Old Harbour Chamber of Commerce), described Lewin as a leader par excellence.
“In both his role as a director and as a cherished friend, Errol Lewin left an indelible mark on the South St Catherine Chamber of Commerce. His dedication, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to our organization were the cornerstones of his legacy.
“As a director, he guided us with vision and innovation, helping steer our chamber towards prosperity and growth. His insights and mentorship enriched our understanding of commerce and community, leaving us better equipped to serve our members and our region.
“Beyond the boardroom, Errol Lewin was a dear friend to us all. His warmth, kindness, and sense of camaraderie created a supportive environment where ideas flourished, and bonds grew stronger. His mentorship extended far beyond business; it touched our hearts and souls,” she said.
“Today, we mourn the loss of not only a respected director but also a beloved friend and mentor. We honor his memory by carrying forward the principles and values he held dear. His legacy will forever inspire us to reach new heights, both professionally and personally.
“In this time of grief, our thoughts are with Errol Lewin’s family, and we share in their sorrow. May his principles continue to guide and inspire us as we honor his memory and carry on his exceptional work.”
It’s a sad time for the Old Harbour Police Youth Club said Corporal William Graham, who is in charge of the police safety and security unit for the Old Harbour Police Zone.
“I had the privilege in the short time being in Old Harbour to meet him and have some real great dialogue... one such discussion was an expo for Old Harbour businesses. Really sad news... To all his family, friends and associates... please accept deepest condolences at this time,” Graham shared on WhatsApp.
