Man fatally shot after allegedly killing mom, injuring security guard
Dead are 22-year-old Khaleel Bent and his mother Omega Bent, 46, both of Two North, Greater Portmore.
Two security officers were injured by Khaleel, who appeared to have suffered a mental breakdown sometime after midnight.
The young man, who it is said is a student of the Caribbean Maritime University, was captured on CCTV in the Phoenix Park Village community – two miles from his home – walking naked with what seems to be a laptop in his hand.
The footages seen by Old Harbour News showed Khaleel attacking a security guard sitting in a Toyota Probox motor car. The guard managed to escape the violent fury of his attacker, who then hijacked the unmarked security vehicle and drove away from the scene.
Moments later Khaleel collided into a Hiace bus at which point he was caught by other security guards who were alerted and went in pursuit.
The security officers were then attacked by Bent, who was subsequently shot fatally during a tussle with one of the guards.
In a preliminary report, the police said the incident with the security guard happened about 1:55 am and that the guard “managed to escape through the passenger side”.
It added that “an armed security officer who was travelling with the supervisor rendered assistance to him and a tussle ensued with both men. The armed guard drew his weapon and fired approximately five shots” which resulted in Khaleel being killed on the scene.
Head of the St Catherine South Police Division SSP Christopher Phillips, told Old Harbour News that he was unable to furnish more details on the matter as the investigation is in its infancy, but noted that they’ve had no report prior to now of Khaleel being a violent person.
It is unclear what triggered such level of rage in the now deceased man that caused him to allegedly take the life of his own mother.
About 5:30 am the body of Mrs. Bent was found by neighbours inside her home after the grille and door of the house were seen open. Police noted observing a wound to her head.
Khaleel is the only child for his parents; his father is a police corporal.
