A man was fatally shot today in an alleged confrontation with law enforcement along the Old Harbour to Free Town main road, near the Bodles Research Centre.

According to unofficial reports received by Old Harbour News, the incident occurred around 12 noon when police officers from the Counter Terrorism and Organised Crime (CTOC) investigation branch intercepted a vehicle driven by the now-deceased individual. The encounter reportedly escalated into a shootout, resulting in the man’s death at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that an illegal firearm was recovered following the shooting. The victim, said to be from Clarendon, has not yet been officially identified.

When Old Harbour News went on the scene the roadway was closed to vehicular access to facilitate the processing of the area.

This latest police-involved shooting comes on the same day that human rights group Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) staged a demonstration protesting the recent surge in fatal police shootings across the island. Advocacy groups have raised concerns over the use of lethal force, calling for greater accountability and transparency in such incidents.

However, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has maintained that many of these shootings occur when individuals choose to engage law enforcement violently rather than surrender peacefully. The JCF argues that officers are often left with no alternative but to use deadly force in life-threatening situations.

Investigations into today’s shooting are ongoing, and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is expected to conduct a probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This case is likely to reignite public debate over police use of force as Jamaica continues to grapple with crime and security challenges.
