Man sentenced to life for 2017 double murder in Old Harbour Bay

Percival Campbell, 30, must serve 19 years in prison before eligible for parole stated the judge Justice Leighton Pusey in handing down the sentence in the Supreme Court.

Following a prolong police investigation, Campbell, a resident of Old Harbour Bay, pleaded guilty in January to the charges of conspiracy to murder and murder of Dwyane Mitchell and Oniel Butler, both of Clarendon addresses.

Campbell, otherwise called ‘Carrot Man’ and two other men identified as Junior Campbell and Corey Black conspired to kill Mitchell and Butler who went to the community to transact the purchasing of an illegal gun.

The plan, the prosecution told the court, was hatched from behind prison walls by Black, who is currently serving a 10-year sentence on gun related charges and robbery.

It is an accusation that Black, also known as ‘G Man’, has denied and so far has repeatedly pled not guilty to the charges along with co-accused Junior Campbell.

However, according to investigators Black was the facilitator behind the gun-for-purchase deal and is the mastermind who instructed Percival and Junior to collect the money and kill the buyers.

At about 3:00 pm on September 20, 2017 Mitchell and Butler met up with Percival and Junior, who are not related, inside the cemetery where they were shot dead on spot.

However, due to quick action by the police, Percival was nabbed within hours after the crime. Further investigation led to the arrest of Junior, who was later charged along with the incarcerated Black.

Since then investigators have managed to piece together several crucial evidence including digital materials that formed an “airtight case” against the accused men.

“This happened because of quick response and thorough investigation by the police. No stones were left unturned in this matter,” said lead investigator Detective Sergeant Leroy Guy.

With Percival pleading guilty it is believed that he could turn key witness for the Crown, as the court now looks to set a trial date for Black and Junior Campbell should they continue to deny the charges against them.
