Dushane Smith, a 36-year-old unemployed resident of North Street, Old Harbour, presented himself yesterday at the St. Catherine South Police Division headquarters in Portmore, accompanied by an attorney.
Smith, widely known as ‘Baller Jesus’, has been the subject of strong rumors implicating him in the fatal shooting of Corporal Mayne at his Claremont Drive home on May 17. However, investigators confirmed to Old Harbour News that there is currently no evidence connecting Smith or any other individual to the crime.
Despite this, detectives intend to thoroughly question Smith in the presence of his lawyer. If no incriminating evidence surfaces, he will be released.
Smith has long been labeled by law enforcement as an active figure in the criminal underworld, with alleged ties to multiple Old Harbour crimes, though he has never been prosecuted. His decision to surrender amid intense public speculation about the cop’s murder has been viewed as both bold and strategic.
Once a celebrated local footballer whose talent earned him the nickname ‘Baller Jesus’, Smith’s reputation has since been overshadowed by alleged criminal involvement.
Investigators continue to probe the killing of Corporal Mayne, a 20-year veteran of the force.
