Man tries to illegally remove ATM machine in Old Harbour

A man is now in custody after he could not explain to the Old Harbour police why he was about to remove an automated teller machine (ATM) machine in the town.

His identity is currently being withheld pending further investigation but remain in custody on suspicion of malicious destruction of property.

Allegations are that on May 5 about 12:30 pm, the man who is from a New Harbour Village address, went to the machine and placed an advisory on its exterior informing the public that the equipment is temporarily out of service for maintenance.

Decked out in the appropriate gear along with a portable welding plant, he went to work. However, one curious onlooker became suspicious and raised an alarm with the police. After raising a few important  questions to which the man, who it is said is a trained technician, could not answer appropriately he was accosted and taken to the nearby station.

No serious damage was reported to the banking facility which remains in operation for public use.

Investigation continues.
