Multiple deaths in major accident on Highway 2000
The fatal crash, it is believed, occurred about midday today and involved a grey Toyota Hiace minibus said to ply the May Pen to Kingston route.
Eleven people from the 16-seater capacity public passenger vehicle (PPV) have been hospitalised, some in critical condition, a senior police officer who was at the scene of the accident informed Old Harbour News.
The driver is reportedly among the dead, while preliminary investigation theorises that the accident may have been caused by a blown tyre. Another vehicle was also involved but the damage is said to be minor while the occupants escaped unhurt. The identities of the deceased have not been released.
The crash happened on the northern side of the toll road near the Spanish Town exit heading eastward, the police said.
Videos of the mangled vehicle and presumed dead bodies lying on the asphalt seen by Old Harbour News are too graphic for display.
A total of six persons, lying twisted and motionless were counted based on amateur videos captured on mobile phones.
In one of the videos, a person on location said about eight persons, if not more, may have died on the spot.
But the police later informed Old Harbour News that it “categorically” can confirmed that only four persons have died so far.
The state of all the injured persons remain unclear at this time.
Highway patrol officers were seen at the scene regulating the flow of traffic as motorists slow to observe the heart-breaking and gut-wrenching crash.
