NWA, Waze partnership to provide real-time traffic and road works updates

The partnership, announced Monday, is designed to assist commuters in efficiently planning their daily routes, particularly during peak hours. Waze Mobile Limited is a subsidiary of Google LLC through which its global navigational platform will be utilised locally.
Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, says the partnership significantly strengthens the agency's public communication capabilities by delivering vetted, accurate information directly to road users.
"Information that is verified, that is legitimate, to do with things like road works, events that are planned and would have been routed through the NWA, anything that is likely to cause an impact on persons' travels, we intend on having placed in the public space in a way that is verifiable," Shaw said.
The initiative comes as schools have reopened, leading to substantially increased peak-hour traffic volumes along major corridors and in urban centres. Through the Waze application, motorists will be provided with live traffic data and recommended detour routes to avoid localized bottlenecks and reduce overall commute times.
Under the partnership, which operates through the "Waze for Cities" initiative, the NWA will feed official operational data into the platform regarding planned road closures, traffic diversions, active construction zones, traffic signal disruptions, and emergency road hazards.
Shaw noted the importance of accurate information in an environment where misinformation circulates. "Us partnering with Waze, it adds a certain amount of legitimacy, or it certainly gives legitimacy generally to the information that is being placed there," he said.
The initiative is designed to give motorists more certainty in planning their journeys. "If you know that there is an impediment, say, on Half-Way Tree Road, and your journey is downtown, and you're coming from, say, Manor Park, you can have the opportunity to plan your route, because that information is there and it's not a situation where you just have to come upon the roadwork taking place," Shaw explained.
Proven Effectiveness in Other Countries
The use of Waze as a tool for traffic management and communication has demonstrated measurable effectiveness in multiple countries worldwide.
In the United States, the City of Boston utilised Waze travel data to measure the impacts of a road safety redesign on Centre Street in West Roxbury. The analysis found that illegal speeding decreased by more than 75%, while travel times only increased by about one minute during daytime hours and less than two minutes during peak periods. The data helped transportation officials make data-driven decisions about traffic calming measures.
Academic research has also validated the accuracy of Waze's crowdsourced data. A study conducted in Sevierville, Tennessee, found that Waze speed data is more accurate during peak hours than at night, and that traffic speed, volume, and segment length significantly influence data accuracy on surface streets. Additional research has shown that using Waze crowdsourced alerts can improve freeway Level-of-Service estimation accuracy by approximately 10%, providing transportation agencies with a reliable method that works regardless of traditional fixed-location sensor availability.
In Iraq, researchers examining Al-Najaf City concluded that Waze data represents "a strategic and cost-effective alternative to monitor service levels," enabling transport planners in growing cities to accurately identify traffic bottlenecks and transform data into immediate operational decisions.
In Brazil, a study by Universidade Anhembi Morumbi found that alternative routes suggested by Waze reduced travel time between Bela Vista and Vila Olímpia in São Paulo from 77 minutes to 42 minutes, demonstrating the app's potential to significantly cut commute times, though researchers noted that such rerouting can increase traffic volume on secondary roads by as much as 120% during peak hours.
Waze, acquired by Google in 2013, now boasts over 140 million monthly active users globally across more than 185 countries and 50 languages. The platform is particularly effective in countries with dense community participation, including the United States, Brazil, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and South Africa.
Shaw says the NWA remains committed to leveraging modern technology to improve safety and efficiency across Jamaica's main road network. The partnership represents a significant step forward in the agency's efforts to modernise its public communication and traffic management capabilities, aligning Jamaica with a growing list of countries that have successfully integrated Waze into their transportation infrastructure updates.
