Old Harbour native and former Reggae Boy Omar Cummings lands coaching role
A 10-year sojourn in the premier football league in the US, has taken the boy born in Bodles, Old Harbour, to Colorado Rapids, Houston Dynamo, San Antonio Scorpions and FC Cincinnati, before hanging up his boots in 2017.
As a seasoned striker in the MLS, Cummings quick turn and speed was a weapon he used to good effect, especially at the Rapids and during his time representing the Reggae Boyz on 35 occasions, scoring seven times.
Now he’s back in familiar territory: Cincinnati State where he kick-started his college career as a then 21-year-old after leaving Rivoli United in Spanish Town, Jamaica.
This time, however, the FC Cincinnati brand ambassador is now a coach at Seven Hills School, a private institution based in the Ohio State.
Seven Hills announced Tuesday the appointment of Mike Combs and Cummings “as the new head and assistant coaches” of its senior boys team.
Cummings, 39, said he accepted the offer after discussion with Combs, who coached him at college.
“He [Combs] thought that I would be great for this job,” Cummings told Old Harbour News. “I thought about it and after serious consideration decided to take the job.”
“As you said, who knows, it could be a long line of possible coaching experiences,” he added.
And while Combs is happy to have one of his protégé on the touchline, Cummings said his foray into coaching is also being celebrated by former Jamaica national teammates Tyrone Marshall and
Shavar Thomas, both currently part of FC Cincinnati youth setup.
Both Thomas and Marshall have been “encouraging me to pursue long-term coaching,” said Cummings.
