Sixty-four high schools are competing in the challenge with the aim being for each institution to collect a minimum of 300,000 plastic bottles between September and the end of November.

According to information on Wisynco’s website, the competing schools so far are responsible for the collection of over 600,000 plastic bottles. The Eco Club school campaign promotes recycling and environmental awareness.

This year’s goal is for the schools to collectively collect upward of 3,000,000 plastic bottles for recycling. The school that collects the most bottles will receive top cash prize of $200,000, with the runners-up getting $100,000 and $75,000 going to the team finishing third.

Cash prizes will go towards environmental initiatives to be monitored and guided by specific criteria.

Kadeja Fairclough lead co-ordinator of the Eco Club at Old Harbour High says the group will be intensifying their collection drive throughout the rest of this month.
