Corporal Kamal Mayne
The incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. as Mayne drove into his yard. He was attacked and suffered a single gunshot wound to the head, dying instantly. His service weapon was stolen during the attack.
Corporal Mayne, aged over 50, had dedicated more than 20 years to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and was assigned to the West Kingston Police Division at the time of his death.
A native of Old Harbour, he began his career in the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF), commonly known as the ‘Blue Seam’.
A well-respected figure in the community, Mayne’s shocking murder has sent waves of grief and outrage beyond Old Harbour, one of Jamaica’s fastest-growing towns.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Richard Stewart was among several high-ranking members of the force present at the scene. Speaking to the press afterwards, DCP Stewart, who heads the JCF’s crime and security portfolio, said “this is a stark reminder of the realities that the police have to face on a day-to-day basis. The facts, in brief, are that about 5:30 am his [Corporal Kamal Mayne] body was found. The facts that we have indicate that he came from his vehicle and was pounced upon and shot. The investigation is very young where we are still working on a theory. Nonetheless we are appealing to members of the public to assist in helping us to bring this investigation to a speedy conclusion.”
Investigations are ongoing as investigators work to apprehend those responsible.
