Repooh social club makes timely donation to student

Last night the Repooh Domino and Social Club eased the burden of one family in the community with a timely donation of $10,000 towards back-to-school preparation.

“I see the need for the community and with the people in the club with me we all come together to reach out to the people in the community; from young to old,” said club president, Justin Hooper, after making the presentation to 12-year-old Judi Dookie of Narine Lane.

“Once I get the support from the members and the people in the community we will do it forever,” vowed Hooper, proprietor of Repooh Lounge, a well-established seafood restaurant, where the presentation was made.

Each year the Repooh Domino and Social Club extends its philanthropy to the people in the community with its school aid and Heroes Day outreach programmes among the main initiatives.

Last year alone, six students in the community benefit from cash donations to assist in offsetting educational costs. The group’s inability to do more this time around, however, was as a direct result of this deadly plague which has not just infected millions and killed hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, but has triggered a major collapse of the world economy.

Dookie, who will commence her secondary education at Old Harbour High in September, was grateful.
“I’m really thankful. It came just sudden,” said the aspiring lawyer of her surprised gift. “My father actually told me.”

“I feel glad and proud. It’s well appreciated,” added Judi’s father Richard Dookie, who is a fisherman – a trade also hit hard by the pandemic. 

The club, founded by Hooper, has been in existence for over 10 years. Current membership is approximately 26 persons with meetings held weekly.

While the growth of the club is important to the members, Hooper said “we would love to see more people” replicating the idea so more persons can benefit.
