Simone Edwards (right) accepts donation from Food for the Poor Jamaica’s executive director, David Mair (left) and director of distribution services, Craig Moss Solomon.
The Jamaican-born former New York Liberty and Seattle Storm player was in the island recently to conduct a few businesses, include stopping by the FFP headquarters in Spanish Town, St Catherine.
Among the items donated were paint, tiles, kiddies furniture, two-burner gas stoves, pencils, folding tables and folding chairs.
The 45-year-old Edwards says she’s grateful for the contribution to her charity which assists underserved children in a section of the war-torn community of August Town, St Andrew called ‘Angola’.
“Food for the Poor has been so helpful it’s overwhelming because you’re thinking about the whole picture but you are just at the start. They made it so much easier by donating those stuff,” Edwards said speaking to Old Harbour News.
“But they’ve always been there for me since the first centre I put in at Hermitage. So I am really grateful to Food for the Poor.
“It’s really going to benefit the kids to have a learning centre where they can come over for reading hours. There’s going to be a mentorship programme.
“At Angola you can see the progress in terms of how the community comes together. So I want to continue to strengthen and also create a safe environment for the kids in the evening where they can get help from university students with their homework especially when they’re preparing for their big exams.”
Food for the Poor has been a longstanding partner of Edwards’ foundation since inception by supplying essential items and other critical needs. The foundation places special emphasis on education through its homework centre, building self-esteem and social skills and anti-bullying.
