Showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast as a tropical wave located over the eastern Caribbean Sea becomes more organised and could become Tropical Storm Eta in the coming days.

“This system is slowly becoming better organized, and conditions appear conducive for further development. A tropical depression is likely to form this weekend as the system moves westward across the central and western Caribbean Sea.

“Regardless of development, this system is expected to produce heavy rainfall across portions of the ABC islands and Jamaica through the weekend,” the National Hurricane Center reported in its latest bulletin issued 8:00 pm Friday.

The system which is moving westward has an 80 percent chance of developing in the next 48 hours and a 90 percent chance over the next five days, experts at the US-based weather observatory believes.

And in its latest update the Meteorological Service of Jamaica said: “The waters of the Caribbean Sea seem set to be troubled again this weekend and through the start of next week as a Tropical Wave moves into conditions favourable for development. Jamaica can expect another round of rainfall increases over the period.”

Last week’s heavy rain caused widespread flooding across the island, damaged roads, buildings and telecommunications infrastructure.
