Two fatally shot in Terminal, Old Harbour Bay
Information reaching Old Harbour News is that the men were shot behind the premises of the power plant in the community.
The police are yet to formally confirm the incident as details are still emerging.
But in the meantime, residents who contacted Old Harbour News are alleging that the men are innocent and were killed in cold blood.
They have identified the men only by their aliases ‘Nigeria’ and ‘Bottle’. Both are said to be from the enclave and were in the process of disposing glass onto an open land when they were engaged by the police, residents also claimed.
At least five police officers were at the location one resident told Old Harbour News, while adding that the bodies of the men were taken away in a marked vehicle en route to a hospital.
Residents have since mounted a roadblock and set debris on fire in protest of the killing.
In an update, Old Harbour News has been able to verify the identity of the deceased men. They are 23-year-old Nigeria Bailey and Daniel McKenzie, 20 years old – both of Terminal, Old Harbour Bay.
An officer, who isn’t authorized to speak, told Old Harbour News that McKenzie is known to the police and was implicated in the September 2023 murder of fisherman Paul Ronaldson along the fishing beach. McKenzie was arrested, but the investigation fell apart after an alleged eyewitness failed to show-up at the identification parade.
However, it is the death of Bailey that has sparked outrage amongst residents who told our news team that he was a decent law-abiding citizen with a bright future ahead of him.
In a brief preliminary report from the police, which residents are refuting, it is alleged that about 2:45 pm the men were approached by officers on duty when a shootout ensued.
One Berretta 9mm with three live rounds and a home-made shotgun with three cartridges were recovered at the scene, the report claimed.
The Old Harbour police have offered not to comment on the incident when contacted.
The Independent Commission (INDECOM), the civilian oversight body that investigates fatal shootings by the state’s security forces and the constabulary’s own international body the Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB) have commenced separate investigation into the matter.
