Miss Intercontinental Jamaica Kayla Smith reflects on her journey | Old Harbour’s Queen
The Old Harbour native has had a rollicking journey in the last six months, placing third in last year’s Miss Universe Jamaica which earned her the Miss Intercontinental Jamaica crown.
In the Philippines, Smith competed with 85 other gorgeous beauties from around the world. She made the top-20 list, but that was the farthest she went.
Admittedly she was disappointed, but the 27-year-old banker was philosophical reflecting on a memorable journey.
“I had the time to sit back and reflect on my journey from entering Miss Universe Jamaica, placing third and being crowned Miss Intercontinental Jamaica and will admit this was no easy feat,” she wrote on her personal Instagram handle while journeying home from the southeast Asian country.
“I believe God started a good work in my life and I also believe He is even a greater finisher. I was a tad bit disappointed when I didn’t make the semi-finals and my question to Him was ‘Lord what is the lesson here?’ because I couldn’t understand the fruits of my harvest… but that was the devil trying to feed my thoughts… it’s only now that I understand the lesson/reason [sic].
“God needed me to tap into the reservoir of His strength more. He taught me perseverance, my strengths and weaknesses, how to truly love the woman He created me to be; be proud of the skin I’m in (MY black is beautiful) and most importantly the power of my beauty.
“The past few months, I was able to lead by example, empower and inspire young minds and that ought to be the greatest reward.
“I really didn’t need a crown on my head to identify as a queen, I have always felt like one and a long time ago people call me Miss Jamaica/Black Beauty… but I’m honoured and truly humbled to have been given the opportunity to represent myself and country internationally.”
Having appeared from mere obscurity, Smith possessed something that many saw in her. Her persona is infectious. She’s vivacious, black and stunningly beautiful, very articulate and intelligent. Smith without doubt was a beauty queen in the eyes of her family and friends. They knew she had the talent.
And to those who knew the little girl from Nightingale Grove it was not a surprise when she was among the crowd favourite at the Miss Universe Jamaica back in August.
She said: “This move came years after being encouraged, pressured, forced into entering and I appreciate those individuals who recognized my potential and believed in my ability to represent and do well with a heart filled with gratitude.
“Here is the most sincere ‘thank you’. Thank you for every prayer, word of encouragement, well wishes. My 27th year was nothing short of amazing. Love and light my people.”
