Point Hill community gets free Wi-Fi
“Big up the USF!” expressed guidance counsellor of the Point Hill Primary School Feliciano Thorpe. Sharing his experience of the education system during the pandemic, he said that the past two years have been challenging regarding access to technology and teaching online. So, on behalf of the principal, students, and staff of the Point Hill Primary School “big up the USF in collaboration with the government and the Member of Parliament, Dr. Christopher Tufton, for launching this initiative in Point Hill”.
Among the proud recipients present at the launch of free community Wi-Fi in Point Hill was Ms. Anna-Kim Williams who is vice president of the Point Hill Community Development Committee. She spoke emphatically about the new service, stating that she is extremely thankful for Wi-Fi as it will enhance communication among residents and those outside of the community. She added that farmers are now able to research the latest technology that can boost their productivity as well as learn about companies that will provide help financially, among other functions.
Jeremy Jones from the Social Development Commission (SDC) pointed to the fact that the Point Hill community Wi-Fi hotspot is an important initiative that has been implemented by the USF as it ensures that the community is connected to the increasingly interconnected world. He added that there are many opportunities that can come from this, as remote and hybrid forms of work are increasing the opportunity to earn a degree as well as boundless forms of entertainment that are present online.
Member of Parliament, St. Catherine West Central, Dr. Christopher Tufton noted that this opportunity was presented to the residents of Point Hill to ensure access to technology to increase the positive development of the community. He added that this initiative will empower the community as it will bridge the inequality gap. He encouraged residence to take advantage of this opportunity and to protect it. He implored residents to use the Wi-Fi to garner information that will make them wiser and smarter if it is used for the right reasons.
The launch of the Point Hill Community Wi-Fi Hotspot represents the first of three-community hotspot in the St. Catherine West Central constituency. The launch of the Point Hill Wi-Fi is in keeping with the Universal Service Fund’s mission of providing 189 Free Community Wi-Fi across the island as they continue “bridging the information gap, providing internet access for everyone”.
