Gutters traffic lights far advance – Spanish Town Mayor

The installation of traffic signals at Gutters is far advance, says Mayor of Spanish Town, Cllr. Norman Scott, who is also chairman of the St Catherine Municipal Corporation.

Responding to a follow-up by Old Harbour News, Mayor Scott said:  “I can tell you there are a number of intersections that are slated to be signalized; that (Gutters intersection) is one, the Old Harbour Road/Featherbed Lane and there is also the St John’s road by-pass, those are the three from my memory.”

Commuters and residents alike have long argued for the installment of traffic signals at Gutters which is the busiest intersection in St Catherine South West outside of Old Harbour town centre.

The area serves a population of approximately 8,000 people in addition to the general motoring public traversing the space on a daily basis, estimated at over 50,000 vehicles.

Due to its natural expansion the area has become accustomed to many accidents, especially during rush hour between 6:00 am – 8:00 am and 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm.

In September 2013 residents protested when 12-year-old Ayesha Green died a day later after being hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross the busy intersection. The protesters demanded that the area be signalized and pedestrian crossing implemented.

To date the area is still without stoplights and a specific pedestrian crossing.
