Head girl Alyssa Evans makes perfect step from Marlie Mount to Campion College
She was told that no space was available to accept new students but followed her instincts nonetheless.
To borrow an old cliché: the rest was history.
Six years onwards, Lindo's daughter Alyssa Evans is standing as a shining beacon, having put down a distinct marker of academic excellence and exemplary leadership.
At the final hurdle as a primary student, Alyssa performed with distinction, registering perfect score in the revamped Primary Exit Profile (PEP) examination to cap a remarkable journey dotted by numerous accomplishments. The school's head girl is one of only two students at the institution to logged 100% in the Ability Task and among a tiny percentage of children nationally to attain such a feat.
"I was really excited for her perfect score. All her years she was always the top girl at school every year. She always wants to give of her best," Lindo said. "From my end I try not to be too overwhelming for her because whenever I get too overwhelming on her she shuts down."
For her superb performance much credit should go to Alyssa, says the mom of two.
Speaking to Old Harbour News an elated Lindo, spoke of her eldest daughter's innate ability to self-monitor and focus on her education especially during the height of the coronavirus pandemic as many aspects of life were forcibly conducted virtually.
Citing her job and being a single mom Lindo said: "She didn't have much of a support system in terms of monitoring her progress.
"She was basically on her own during all of this traumatic (pandemic) time we've been going through.
"This achievement must be placed on her for her dedication and commitment to do well."
It's a dream come true for the proud mother, seeing that her daughter will be pursuing her secondary education at one of the elite schools on the island known for its rich history in academia.
Alyssa says she wants to be a doctor one day and believes Campion is right institution to bring her closer to realize such ambitions.
"I'm excited to meet more people like me," said the 11-year-old budding Campionite. "I'm really excited to be going somewhere where there are people who are as smart as me or even smarter than me.
"This just means that I have to work harder so that I can be on top."
Alyssa said her years at "Marlie Mount were great" and credited the "excellent teachers" for her success.
Her leadership acumen is further evidenced by her strong participation as a member of the school's A-Quest, Math Olympiad and Quiz teams.
While having a child with a high IQ is the dream of almost every parent, it comes with different challenges just the same, Lindo noted.
"I have set it from early to say that I am the mother and I know what's good for you,” she said.
"But as she gets smarter she tends to challenge me. So I have to remind her that I am the mother and although she is smart and maybe smarter than me, I still know what's best for her," said Lindo.
Alyssa was the valedictorian at her school’s virtual graduation, where her mature delivery caught the eye.
“We have been through the impossible which taught us that we can overcome any obstacle,” she said in her speech at the time in reference to the impact of the pandemic.
Indeed Marlie Mount has developed a gem for Campion to only apply the finishing touches.
