Proud Powell reflects on leading West Indies after stepping down

Rovman Powell has announced his decision to step down as captain of the West Indies Men’s T20 International team, marking the end of a two-year leadership stint.

In a heartfelt statement, Powell expressed gratitude to Cricket West Indies (CWI), his teammates, and supporters while reflecting on the team’s remarkable rise in the rankings under his guidance. 

 

"West Indies cricket is of great importance to not just myself, but the people of the Caribbean," Powell said. "Leading West Indies was an honor and something I will forever be proud of." 

 

He extended thanks to CWI for the opportunity, stating, "I would like to thank CWI for the opportunity to lead over the last two years." 

 

Powell also reserved special praise for his teammates, acknowledging their unwavering support.

"To the players, a special thank you for the support from the very first day to the last day as your captain."

Highlighting the team’s progress, the Old Harbour native added: "During the duration of my captaincy, we have made incredible strides, moving from 9th to 3rd in the world, something we can be tremendously proud of."

 

The Jamaican all-rounder also expressed gratitude to the fans, saying: "To the Maroon fans and all lovers of West Indies cricket, my family and I thank you all for the support."

 

Powell’s tenure saw the West Indies T20I team climb significantly in the ICC rankings, with notable performances in bilateral series and global tournaments against the India, England and South Africa. 

CWI is yet to announce his successor as the team prepares for upcoming fixtures.
