Norman Manley Law School with Old Harbour’s Stephen Nelson, reaches Advanced Rounds of international law debate
The team of Alicia Ramdal, Stephen Nelson, Jessica Zouetr and Gabrielle Chin led the sole institution from the Caribbean after four preliminary round matches.
Nelson is a native of Nightingale Grove in southwest St Catherine and past student of Marlie Mount Primary and Glenmuir High schools.
The Norman Manley Law School “congratulate” the team after they joined 93 other teams into the next phase of the competition referred to as the Jessup 2022 White & Case International Rounds.
Teams will be advised on the next stages of the competition at a later date.
With the entire Caribbean region rooting for them, the NMLS team will face sterner tests ahead from teams across all the continents.
According to the International Law Students Association (ILSA), organisers of the event, Jessup is the world's largest moot court competition, with participants from roughly 700 law schools in 100 countries and jurisdictions.
The competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. One team is allowed to participate from every eligible school. Teams prepare oral and written pleadings arguing both the applicant and respondent positions of the case.
The ILSA said Jessup 2022 competition concerns human rights on the Internet, data theft, the secession of part of a nation's territory, and foreign election interference.
Advancing teams will progress to the Round-of-16 to be announced April 4, 2022.
