Chapleton Murder | Knife, bloody clothes found, person of interest in police custody

Investigators handling the chilling murder of a mother and her four children in Chapleton, Clarendon are making progress in a crime that has reverberated beyond the shores of the country.

By midnight the police announced that Rushane Barnett, who was listed as a person of interest in relation to the gruesome killing, is now in police custody. Barnett, 23, is the cousin of Kemisha Wright, the mother of the children.

“The police have captured the main suspect, 23-year-old Rushane Barnett, in the Clarendon quintuple murder committed on Tuesday, June 21. He was arrested about 9:15 p.m. in Wilson Run, Warsop in Trelawny,” the Jamaica Constabulary Force stated.

Head of the JCF’s communications unit SSP Stephanie Lindsay told Nationwide News Network that detectives have discovered a knife and blood-soaked clothing in the precinct of the New Road family home and are of the opinion that the items are connected to the crime.

Thirty-four year-old Wright and her four children: Kimana Smith (15 years old girl); Shemari Smith (10 years old girl); Kafana Smith (5 years old girl) and little Kishaun Henry, a baby boy only 23 months old were yesterday morning discovered dead inside the house. Their throats were slashed and bodies have stabbed wounds.

Their deaths have sparked widespread condemnation from all sectors across the country.
