Old Harbour to celebrate Jamaica 60 with float parade
Organisers of the event informed Old Harbour News that the parade is scheduled to get underway at approximately 10:00 am starting from the town square. The convoy will proceed to Gutters, then return to Old Harbour and climax at the Old Harbour Bay public beach.
Among the cavalcade will be a team of bikers, revelers, music trucks, cadets and 2018 Miss St Catherine Festival Queen Stacy-Ann Nelson, who is native of Old Harbour.
Spokesperson for the Old Harbour Zone Cultural Committee Treacha Reid is imploring residents to be a part of the excitement.
“We want this to be an experience to remember for the entire family,” she said. “We want everybody to come out and join the parade. And if you can’t join the parade come out along the sidewalks and cheer and celebrate as we pass by.”
Reid, who is the president of the South St Catherine Chamber of Commerce, added: “It’s important that we create the independence fever here in Old Harbour because not everyone will get the chance to go to Kingston and witness Grand Gala in person.
“We talk about stirring national pride, but in order to sustain such patriotism it must start at the community level, which is our objective as a committee for not only this event but other national events of cultural significance.”
On Sunday, the eve of Emancipation Day, the Old Harbour Zone Cultural Committee hosted a flag-raising ceremony which included a parch-past. The event was the first of its kind to be ever held in Old Harbour, regarded as the fastest growing town in Jamaica.
