The casket with the body of the late police Corporal Oliver Mullings Jnr
The late police Corporal Oliver Mullings Jnr will be accorded an official gun salute posthumously following a farcical end at his funeral last Sunday.
Forty-six years old Mullings Jnr, a veteran crime fighter of 19 years, died in the line of duty after he was shot in the head by gunmen in Trench Town, West Kingston during a police operation on October 20.
It is customary for officers killed in the line of duty to be accorded such an honour which was conspicuously absent at the Thetford Park Cemetery where the body of Mullings Jnr interred.
This glaring breach in protocol did not go unnoticed to Commissioner of Police Major General Antony Anderson, who was present at the funeral and has since ordered an investigation into the administrative bundling.
In a memo sent hours after Mullings Jnr was laid to rest, Commissioner Anderson said of the fiasco: “As a member of the JCF who performed honourably, he was deserving of all our best efforts in the performance of his last rites. Unfortunately, we let him, his family and the JCF down.
“This failure to adequately execute the standards and procedures as outlined in Force Policy will not be tolerated and once the full report is received, swift corrective action will be taken.”
While we await the outcome of the investigation, the constabulary has since announced that a brief ceremony to unveil the headstone and firing of volleys for the slain cop will be held on
December 4, 2022 at the Thetford Park Cemetery commencing 11:30 am.
The Commissioner of Police and other members of the JCF’s top brass will be present for the occasion, Old Harbour News can report.
