Optimist International Caribbean District Zone 4 hosts “March Movements’
For the year 2022-2023, under the theme ‘Helping Young People Everywhere’ also referred to by its acronym HYPE, District Governor Creig Kinch declared that: “Regular physical activity is one of the most important things that can be done for our health and everyone can experience the benefits of physical activity regardless of age, abilities, ethnicity, shape, or size.”
Governor Kinch added that some benefits of physical activity include improved thinking or cognition for children six to 13 years of age, and reduced short-term feelings of anxiety for adults. Additionally, moderate-intensive aerobic activity can lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. Whilst, regular physical activity can reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Both diet and physical activity play a critical role in maintaining a healthy body weight.
He said, the ‘Let’s Get Moving’ initiative, will encourage the Caribbean District through its zones/clubs to create activities (walks, hikes, fun runs, aerobic sessions) to get our Caribbean communities (children, teens, youth, and our wider societies), moving again in order to harness the benefits of physical activity and promote healthy lifestyles”.
Each zone will have a spotlight month to promote and execute its flagship project activities. The overall target is over 100,000 children and young persons across the region.
Zone 4, led by Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Brown, is made up of adult as well as college clubs which are Bull Bay, Harbour View, Cross Roads, Caribbean Maritime University, Mico University College, Eastern Stars, Eagles of Exed, St. Matthew’s, Kingston, Greater Portmore Sunshine, and Fusion of New Kingston.
A series of activities dubbed ‘March Movements’ to engage children as well as adults in various activities.
These will include:
- 04 March Dancercise – Allman Town Primary School
- 08 March – Panel Discussion - All Female Panelists in recognition of International Women’s Day Physical Activities and Non Communicable Diseases
- 18 March – Mini Health Fair/Sports Day
