Old Harbour News understands that an internal police probe of a physical altercation in Old Harbour captured on camera has been launched.

In a video circulating on social media which has been shared with Old Harbour News, the officers assigned to the Old Harbour Police Station were observed in a tussle with a man beside a BMW motor vehicle.

Information reaching our news centre is that on the weekend a vehicle with two men aboard was stopped by the police along West Street in front of Gateway Plaza when an argument developed between one of the men and the police.

In the video, which is more than a minute and 30 seconds long, one of the police was seen slapping the man which escalated the situation.

Both men were then handcuffed and taken to the station where it is understood that they have been charged with assault and resisting arrest.

At the same time, the high command of the St Catherine South Police Division has launched its own investigation into the matter, however no timeline was given as the top brass of the division continue to gather as much information as possible.

It is also unclear if the officers involved have been taken off frontline duties pending the outcome of the internal investigation.

Meantime the Independent Commission has reportedly received a copy of the now viral video, but indicated that it cannot commence an investigation without a formal report from the complainant.

Hamish Campbell, assistant commissioner of INDECOM, told the Jamaica Observer that it has shared the footage with the Jamaica Constabulary Force, asking that they investigate the incident.
