Donnarine Cargill shares images of the JPS pole outside her yard in Bartons, northern Old Harbour.

It has been more than a year Donnarine Cargill says she has been agitating for the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) Company to urgently replace a decaying light pole hovering above her house.

Her fears were further heightened recently when a 5.6 magnitude earthquake rock the entire country nearly a month ago and then last week’s passage of a tropical cyclone that drenched the island for a couple of days causing landslide and flooding in some regions.

In a video shared with Old Harbour News, Cargill who lives at 8 Miles, Bartons in northern Old Harbour highlighted where the wooden pole is showing obvious signs of decaying while the restraining wire used to keep the post upright has been long disconnected from the ground.

“It is leaning in me yard,” she said. “You should see it swinging over in the earthquake. I’m tired to tell JPS.”

Cargill has given us permission to share her mobile number (876 508 2745) in the article so a JPS representative is able to contact her as soon as possible.

Meanwhile in two subsequent posts shared on her personal Facebook account, Cargill appealed to the light and power company.

In her plea which we have redacted, Cargill added: “JPS please come and remove the current wire from over my house. Over two years now we reported it and you did nothing. The root of the post is rotten. You sent two young men   with ladder because it is giving short circuit in my house. They couldn't climb the rotten post with the ladder, they need the bucket truck. Now its rainy time and you are not responding to people's concern. It's a shame how you are treating poor people! The post has no braces across the road to keep it firm. The brace post fall down over three years ago! JAMAICA PUBLIC SERVICE! Do better than that.

“Are you waiting on accidents? The root is rotten. The post brace has fallen down more than a year now. You just keep promising to come and we are having short circuit now in the home.”
