Last Thursday at Kaluga Kafe several students residing in Old Harbour had the chance to meet Natalie Ho, the Jamaican-born US resident who took it upon herself to provide them with financial assistance towards the new academic school year.

According to Ho, a past student of Marlie Mount Primary and Old Harbour High, meeting the beneficiaries and in some instances their parents, gave her a better understanding of the challenges of each individual.

In total 19 students benefited from the initiative which received support from other donors of Old Harbour origin but reside overseas.

They all expressed gratitude to Ho for the financial aid which came at the most opportune time, especially for sixth form students, many of whom had outstanding tuition from the previous school term and would not have been allowed to continue their education without clearing the debt.

“We’re expecting nothing in return, but ask that you just work hard in school and make us proud,” Ho said, before acknowledging the support of other donors in Sheneal Amos, Simon Vaz, Dion Gardner and others who prefer their names not to be mentioned.

A total of $260,250.00 was expended, she announced, while noting an additional US$2,200 was provided for one student who was in the US on a summer internship programme in Dallas, Texas.

Ho is now hoping other persons will come on board next year to ensure more students can benefit.
