Weir, an Old Harbour High alumnus and principal since 2010 made the six-member shortlist which includes principals from George Headley Primary, Hague Primary, Retirement Primary, Steer Town Primary and Maryland Primary.

A six-member shortlist for Lasco Teacher of the Year comprises of teachers from deCarteret College, Porus High, Aabuthnott Gallimore High, Immaculate Conception High, Cedar Grove Academy, Farm Primary and Junior High.

Since rising to the helm of his alma mater, the former agricultural science teacher has led the St Catherine South West institution on a path of transformation geared toward the holistic development of each student under its care.

Weir has since embarked on a set of ambitious ‘legacy’ programmes aimed at achieving financial sustainability, improving the school’s environment for learning and ultimately achieving greater academic and non-academic excellence.

The implementation of a lecture theatre, which is also available for rental to the public; a document and stationery hub; a state-of-the-art abattoir; and the installation of solar panels to reduce its electricity bill are some of the major accomplishments under Weir’s leadership.

Aesthetically the school, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, is arguably among the best in the country, while its academic performance is slowly moving upward. Outside of the classroom, the school has won the hearts of many far and wide, most notably when they copped the 2016 TVJ All Together Sing high school choir competition.
