The $61 million project, funded by the CHASE Fund, is expected to transform the learning experience for young students at one of Jamaica’s oldest primary institutions.
The new infant department, set to be completed by the end of April 2025, will feature four modern classrooms, a kitchen, an office, a sickbay, and upgraded bathroom facilities. This development is part of a broader initiative by the CHASE Fund to enhance infrastructure at several government schools across Jamaica, reflecting a strategic investment in the nation’s educational future.
With the addition of the infant department, Old Harbour Primary’s student population is projected to grow to over 1,500. More importantly, the school anticipates a marked improvement in academic performance, particularly among its youngest learners. Currently, the school faces challenges with a high percentage of grade one students performing below the national average. However, the new facility is expected to address these issues by providing a more conducive learning environment and access to better-trained, highly qualified teachers.
George Goode, principal of Old Harbour Primary expressed optimism about the project, stating the new infant department will not only expand capacity but also elevate the quality of education on offer. He contends that its newest department will be a game-changer for the students, the school and the community as a whole.
Construction on the project began in November 2024 and is progressing on schedule. The school community eagerly awaits the completion of the facility, which is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the academic success of future generations.
