Finnish Lutheran Church votes against same-sex marriage

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland has voted against formally recognizing same-sex marriages in its constitution, falling short of the required majority. Last month, the church council voted 62–40 in favor of the proposal, but it needed a three-quarters majority (77 votes) to pass.

The measure, proposed by the Bishops’ Conference in 2023, sought to include same-sex unions alongside heterosexual marriages while allowing clergy to opt out based on personal beliefs. Despite its rejection, the current practice, where some priests officiate same-sex weddings without mandatory participation from all parishes, remains unchanged.

According to the Helsinki Times, supporters, including Archbishop Tapio Luoma, expressed hope for future approval, stating the issue would likely be revisited. Opponents upheld traditional doctrinal views, while advocates argued that aligning with Finland’s gender-neutral marriage laws (in place since 2017) is essential for inclusivity.

The Church remains divided, but discussions were reportedly respectful. The next opportunity to reconsider the proposal will be at future church assembly sessions.
