However, one local doctor has decided to share his method of combating the seasonal flu, particularly the H1N1 virus, which has contributed to the death of a few people.

General medical practitioner Dr Orlando Thomas of Thomas Medical Centre located in Old Harbour, suggests proper hygiene such as frequent hand washing and taking Vitamin D and C supplements as excellent starting points.

Dr Thomas, one of two known Jamaicans on the island certified in clinical functional medicine, also recommends a particular naturopathic medicine – a combination of local fruits and spices – to fight H1N1 or other types of influenza.

In a six-minute video presentation posted on his YouTube channel, Dr Thomas cautioned persons against consuming milk and sugar which provide the environment for flu to thrive.

This personal habit developed over time, he said, along with regular homemade green juice, eating lots of nuts, grains and leafy vegetables have enabled him to keep the flu virus at bay.

Getting the flu vaccine is also an option but he believes this is best suited for children, the elderly and persons with other underlying health issues.

So if you feel like you have the flu or more specifically being diagnosed with the H1N1virus, there’s no need to panic, says Dr Thomas.
