Kevon Godfrey Memorial Basketball tourney returns to Old Harbour
After a two-year hiatus due to the covid-19 pandemic, some of country’s best youth basketball teams will assemble at the Church of Christ basketball court in Marlie Acres, Old Harbour on December 17 for a one-day classic that promises to renew friendly rivalry and generate plenty of excitement.
Start time is 9:00 am.
Teams down for the all-day extravaganza are Old Harbour High, Jamaica College, Ardenne High, Manchester High, Calabar High and Excelsior High. The hexagonal rally will see each team pitting their best under-16 players in a round-robin format with two zones. The top two teams will then advance to the semifinal knockout with the winners advancing to the final and battle for the top trophy.
Honours will be up for grabs for other sectional prizes including most valuable player (MVP) and most disciplined team.
Co-founder of the Kevon Godfrey Basketball Academy and chief tournament organizer Pastor Ricardo Edwards says the event is free and is urging the public to come out and enjoy the festivities.
“It is going to be a wonderful, packed day filled with fun and excitement,” he said. “Our theme for this year is ‘We Remember Kevon’. We will be having lots of giveaways, fun galore, DJ Chinny on the turntable.
Edwards, who is also co-founder of the Kevon Godfrey Youth Foundation, added: “Invite your church, invite your community, invite your school. Come with a praise, come to have fun in the sun, but moreso have fun in the Son (Jesus). It’s going to be a mega time.
“We will have bun eating competition, we will have free-throw shooting competition, we’ll have three-point competition and then we’ll have those young talents that will be showcasing their skills on the platform.”
Keynote Speaker will be head of Thomas Medical Centre Dr Orlando Thomas who will speak on the impact of cancer, its awareness and how to get screen early for detection.
The late Kevon Godfrey is former student of Old Harbour High who died from cancer in the United States of America shortly after receiving a basketball scholarship.
