This comes in effect September 16, 2022.

The notes being phased out have been replaced by the “polymer £20 and £50 notes” which went into circulation in 2020 and 2021 respectively. The old £20 note features Adam Smith, who is regarded as one of the UK’s fathers of economist, while the £50 paper note features Matthew Boulton and James Watt, both credited for designing and manufacturing coins with anti-counterfeit security features.

As for the new £20 and £50 polymer notes, the former features painter JMW Turner while the latter bears the image of Alan Turing, a renowned computer scientists, mathematician and cryptographer.

NCB, Jamaica’s largest commercial bank, stated in an advisory to its customers: “The 16th of September, 2022 is the last day for you to deposit or exchange your paper £20 and £50 notes at National Commercial Bank Jamaica Limited (NCB) branches.

“The Bank of England will withdraw the legal tender status of paper £20 and £50 notes after the 30th of September 2022. The paper notes have been replaced by new polymer notes.

“If you have any paper £20 and £50 notes, please visit an NCB branch near you to deposit your notes or to exchange them for Jamaican currency using our FX services by the 16th of September, 2022.”
