Meta unveils AI business agent for customer service
Article By: Old Harbour News
Announced a little more than a week ago, the new agent effectively gives businesses of all sizes an “infinite team”, capable of handling everything from answering product questions and closing sales to booking appointments — all while the human owner sleeps.
The move comes as Meta reports that over one billion active threads now exist between businesses and customers daily across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. Already, more than one million businesses are piloting the agent on WhatsApp and Messenger.
“We want every business to show up for every customer, every time,” a Meta spokesperson said. “Business Agent turns that impossible math into a one-click solution.”
From Morning Coffee to Market Intelligence
For small business owners accustomed to waking up to a backlog of 3:00 am customer queries, the agent offers a novel feature: a morning briefing. The AI summarizes missed overnight chats, highlights urgent threads, and provides trend insights — essentially acting as a digital chief operating officer (COO).
But Meta isn't stopping at customer service. The company plans to expand the agent's capabilities to handle full daily operations, including market research, competitive intelligence, and calendar management. Businesses can join a waitlist for those advanced features made available from June 3.
Your Agent, Your Rules
Recognizing that a bakery and a bank have very different needs, Meta also launched the Meta Business Agent Platform — an enterprise-grade infrastructure that allows larger companies to build, customize, and deploy agents at scale.
The platform plugs directly into existing business ecosystems, with integrations for hundreds of systems including Shopify, Zendesk, and Shopee. Enterprise clients can set guardrails, define rules, and measure performance, all within the messaging apps customers already use.
Free to Start, Subscription Coming
In a bid to drive rapid adoption, Meta says getting started with a Basic Business Agent is free. Businesses can activate the agent on Instagram, with WhatsApp and Messenger support already live.
However, the company confirmed that in the coming months, access will shift to a paid subscription model. Meta emphasized that there will be “options for businesses of every size” to ensure solopreneurs aren’t priced out.
Discovery Gets Easier
To help these new AI-powered businesses get found, Meta is also tweaking WhatsApp’s search functionality. Soon, users will be able to discover businesses by simply typing a name into the search bar or sharing a contact card in group chats with friends.
Analysts see the move as a direct challenge to other AI customer-service platforms, but with a distinct advantage: Meta’s existing ubiquity.
This isn’t a standalone chatbot website argued tech industry analysts but a beast of a system that lives inside the DMs people already check 50 times a day.
Businesses can activate their Meta Business Agent via the WhatsApp Business app, Instagram Pro, Messenger, or Meta Business Suite.
