Three-week-old baby girl Vernesha Evans, who was taken away by a woman after the mother sought her assistance in order to use the bathroom at the Cornwall Regional Hospital, has been found.
The toddler was discovered in the Greens district area of Norwood, St James at about midday today, in the company of the female suspect – a 26-year-old bartender.
The female suspect and her fiancé, who was at the house at the time the police went there, have been arrested in connection with the matter. Their names are being withheld for the time being pending further investigation. While at the hospital last Friday, the mother of Evans, felt the urge to use the bathroom and sought the assistance of the female whom she had been talking to at the health facility.
But when the mother returned from the bathroom, the woman and her baby were not to be seen.
An alarm was raised and the matter reported to the police who subsequently released CCTV footage of the female suspect to the public, as well as an image of the child.
The mother would spend the next two nights without sleep as she sought information along with the police from every possible source that could lead to finding her baby.
But some 48 hours later her prayers were answered when detectives attached to the Free Port Police Station and investigators from the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offenses and Child Abuse (CISOCA), acting on intelligence, went to the Norwood community in the city of Montego Bay The child was then taken to a medical facility for examination before being reunited with her mother.
Meanwhile the police are crediting citizens for their support to help locate the baby. However, the police are warning mothers to resist the urge of leaving their child in the care of strangers.
Investigation is ongoing.
