VIDEO: Work begins to install Gutters traffic signals
Recently Old Harbour News visited the location and observed preparatory work projected to last several weeks.
For more than a decade residents and motorists have been calling for the area to be signalized and appropriate signs erected amid increasing traffic flow and public safety concerns.
It is understood that the square will get a facelift with new sidewalks put in place, while the bus stop is likely to be relocated a few metres eastward given the close proximity of where one of the signal poles will be planted.
Communications Manager at the National Works Agency (NWA) Stephen Shaw has promised to provide an update.
The development is welcome news to the public as the area continues to grow at a rapid pace with commercial activities and housing.
Outside of Old Harbour town centre, Gutters is the largest commercial district in southwest St Catherine.
Gutters has been the scene of many accidents over the years, the majority though minor in nature. But there have been a few deadly encounters, the most high profile being 12-year-old Ayesha Green, who died a day later after being hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross the busy intersection in September 2013. In October 2020 Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) soldier Jermaine Edwards sustained multiple injuries including a broken leg after he was mowed down by a BMW motor car.
