Lamar Myers, also known as "Duppy Mecca," from the Africa enclave on Burke Road in Old Harbour, turned himself in to the authorities on Friday. Myers, 27, was accompanied by a relative when he reported to the Old Harbour Police Station, Old Harbour News can report.
Myers was among several individuals listed as persons of interest by the police and had been ordered to report to the nearest station by January 24.
Investigators from the Old Harbour Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB) revealed that Myers is linked to multiple murders in the area and had served time in juvenile corrections after being found guilty before a magistrate for shooting with intent and illegal possession of a firearm.
He is expected to remain in custody while undergoing a series of question-and-answer sessions with detectives, pending the appointment or retention of legal counsel.
In the meantime, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Troyville Haughton, who oversees operations in the St. Catherine South Police Division, has urged the other individuals on the list to surrender.
The following individuals are still being sought:
• Desmond Kelly, also known as "Chuku"
• Tuwayne Marshall, also known as "Stinger"
• George Murray, also known as "Dulce"
• Romaine Thompson, also known as "Rum Stain"
• Kevin Bent, also known as "Kevin Square"
• Cornel Miller, also known as "Nyam Nyam"
• Michael Chambers, also known as "Pangy"
“We want you to come and turn yourself in to the police before the week ends. It is very clear that we have a very significant interest in interacting with you from the station level. We have some questions to ask and we need you to turn yourself in to the police by Friday (January 24) of this week,” DSP Haughton said during a media briefing on January 20.
The media exchange followed a walkthrough of Old Harbour town led by Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Christopher Phillips, the Area 5 commander.
DSP Haughton emphasized that the police would continue operational activities to target not only the named individuals but also anyone involved in criminal activities within the area.
“Notwithstanding we will continue to carry out these operational activities and we will be targeting not only these persons who have been named here but anyone who features in any criminal activity within the space, you are a target. So please turn yourselves in and let us settle these matters,” he added.
At the time, the entire St. Catherine South Police Division, including Old Harbour, was under a 48-hour curfew, which has since escalated to a State of Emergency (SOE) due to a spike in violent crimes earlier in the month.
DSP Haughton noted that the public would witness intensified security operations under the SOE. He said the aim of these efforts is to restore safety and security across the Old Harbour area so residents can feel safe at home, in their businesses, and in public spaces.
Four murders have been recorded in the Old Harbour area since the start of the year.
