Jamaica mark World Wetlands Day in Old Harbour Bay

World Wetlands Day is celebrated February 2 annually to raise awareness about the importance and real value of wetlands to human existence and the planet.

For example, 40% of all species on the planet live or breed in wetlands. Its distinct ecosystem plays many important roles, such as acting as a barrier between land and sea, as well as a sponge to remove pollutants.

The team spent most of the day counting the different species of birds in wetlands. This data is collated and submitted to the international body.

“By doing this we are showing how important wetlands are,” said environmentalist Damion Whyte.

The Old Harbour Bay coastline falls within the Portland Bight Protected Area which is 724 square miles in size, 32 square miles of which are wetlands.

More than one billion people around the world make a living from wetlands.
