CONCACAF League postponed until further notice

In a statement, football’s governing body for North and Central America and the Caribbean, said the decision became necessary due to uncertainties surrounding the start of other leagues.

“Our club competitions are dependent on the resumption of several domestic leagues and, as some remain in an uncertain position, we have made the decision to postpone the start of the 2020 Scotiabank CONCACAF League, which was scheduled to begin on July 28,” the governing body stated.

The continental club football competition features 22 teams in a knockout cup format with each round having two legs. The top six teams in the competition proceed to the CONCACAF Champions League.

The competition, like everything else, has been severely impacted by the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, a respiratory illness that has infected more than nine million people and caused more than 470,000 deaths worldwide.

CONCACAF further stated that they are encouraged seeing some football leagues in Europe recommencing their season, albeit under very strict protocols.  

“We continue to work with our stakeholders to ensure we are well prepared to restart our competitions as soon as it is safe to do so. We are encouraged by the leagues across our confederation which have resumed play, or have firm plans to do so in the coming weeks,” the organisers added.
 
“We will continue to discuss with our member associations, leagues, clubs and other stakeholders proposals for the Scotiabank CONCACAF League to begin in the coming months.”
