Old Harbour Bay resident Joseph Simpson must wait a few more weeks to know how long he will stay behind bars after pleading guilty to illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

The 38-year-old labourer of Terminal Road had his sentencing date postponed until September 21 after his attorney Donahue Martin did not show up today for the matter in the Gun Court.

Simpson, otherwise called ‘Natty’ was initially arrested on reasonable suspicion of being in possession of an illegal gun.

On the morning of May 29, 2020 members of the security forces on patrol in the community found a Taurus 9mm with a magazine containing 17 live rounds in an unfinished section of Simpson’s home.

Simpson denied knowledge of the weapon but was subsequently charged formally following a lengthy investigation.

During trial the accused consistently told the court he was not guilty of the charges against him.

But detectives tilted the burden of proof in their favour when significant amount of DNA and digital forensics presented as evidence proved beyond doubt that Simpson knew about the illegal gun.

On July 8, 2021, Simpson finally pleaded guilty to the charges before puisne judge, Justice Grace Henry-McKenzie, who then set a sentencing date of July 30. But the sentencing was put off due to the absence of Simpson’s attorney.

The outcome of this case will be celebrated by detectives who have been keeping a close watch on Simpson who they had previously arrested on reasonable suspicion for two separate murders committed in the Terminal area. On both occasions, however, he was released due to insufficient evidence.
